Madeira sits above one of the Atlantic's deepest underwater canyons, and the seafloor drops from a narrow shelf to over 3,000 metres within a few nautical miles of Funchal. That geography is why so much marine life passes so close to shore. Here's what you can actually expect to see, ranked by how likely you are to see it, and when.
1. Short-finned pilot whales
Pilot whales are Madeira's resident whale, present year-round in family pods of 10 to 30 animals. They travel slowly and rest at the surface for long stretches, which makes them the easiest whale on this list to actually watch rather than just glimpse — a quiet boat with the engine off can sit alongside a resting pod for minutes at a time.
2. Bottlenose dolphins
The most common sighting off Funchal, often in pods of 20 to 80 animals. Bottlenose dolphins are naturally curious and will frequently approach a boat on their own, riding the bow wave whether the engine is running or not — though they stay longer once it's switched off.
3. Common dolphins
Faster and more acrobatic than bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins travel in large, sometimes vast pods and are enthusiastic, energetic bow-riders. They're seen year-round and are usually the liveliest encounter of any trip.
4. Atlantic spotted dolphins
A seasonal arrival, present mainly from June to September. Adults are easy to identify by the grey-and-white speckled flanks that give them their name — juveniles are born plain grey and develop spots with age.
5. Loggerhead sea turtles
Loggerheads surface to breathe throughout the summer months and are remarkably unbothered by a quiet, drifting boat — close encounters within a few metres aren't unusual on a calm day. They're most often spotted resting at the surface rather than swimming actively.
6. Sperm whales
The largest toothed whale on the planet, and the rarest whale sighting off Madeira. Sperm whales pass through on migration, most commonly reported in spring and autumn, and when spotted they typically rest motionless at the surface before a deep dive that can last 30 minutes.
7. Mediterranean monk seals
Around 25 to 30 monk seals live around the Desertas Islands, a strict nature reserve roughly 22 nautical miles southeast of Funchal — making this the one animal on the list you won't see on a standard coastal trip. Sightings are reserved for licensed operators' full-day Desertas excursions, and even then a landing or close encounter is never guaranteed.
8. Flying fish
Near-guaranteed in flat, calm conditions. Flying fish burst from the surface and glide 20 to 30 metres on outstretched pectoral fins before re-entering the water — a strange, silvery flash that most first-time visitors don't expect from Madeira's waters.
9. Manta rays
An occasional but memorable sighting in the warmer months, usually seen feeding near the surface with their distinctive wing-like pectoral fins breaking the water. Far less predictable than dolphins or pilot whales, but a genuine highlight when it happens.
10. Reef fish in the coastal coves
Away from the open-water species, the inshore coves between Funchal and Cabo Girão hold their own show: shoals of wrasse and parrotfish, the occasional moray eel tucked into the rocks, and clear enough water most of the year to see all of it from the surface with just a mask and snorkel.
