Sunset in Funchal ranges from around 6:00 pm in early December to roughly 9:20 pm in late June, which is later than mainland Portugal despite Madeira's Atlantic location, thanks to the island's time zone. The June solstice gives the island its longest day, about 14 hours 18 minutes of daylight; the December solstice gives the shortest, around 10 hours 2 minutes. In practice this means a summer evening trip can depart well after dinner time and still catch full daylight, while a winter trip needs to leave the marina by mid-afternoon.
Why does the sunset look different in Madeira?
It's the moisture in the Atlantic air. Madeira sits in a belt of warm, humid ocean air that regularly forms low, thin cloud banks along the south coast — and those clouds are what catch and hold colour, rather than a clear sky, which tends to fade quickly once the sun drops. The volcanic cliffs along the coastline also block and reflect the last light differently depending on where you're sitting, so the same sunset can look completely different from Câmara de Lobos than it does further out over open water.
What's the best month for a sunset cruise?
