What to Pack for a Boat Trip in Madeira

9 October 20265 min readFunchal · Madeira

Packing for a boat day in Madeira is simple: swimwear, sun protection and one warm layer. Here is exactly what to bring on a Chifbay Day Trip or Sunset Trip from Funchal, and what you can leave at the hotel.

What should I bring on a boat trip in Madeira?

Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a light jacket, and wear soft-soled shoes. The coast south of Funchal is sunny and often breezy, and it feels a few degrees cooler on the water once the boat is moving. Everything else is optional.

What should I wear for the Day Trip?

Wear your swimsuit under light clothing, because the Day Trip stops to swim at Fajã dos Padres and Ribeira Brava. You can jump in, swim or paddle, so a dry layer for the fast run back to Funchal is worth having. Departures are at 10:00 and 14:00, and the return leg can feel fresh when you are wet.

  • Swimwear (wear it under your clothes) and a quick-drying towel
  • Sunscreen, ideally reef-friendly, and lip balm with SPF
  • A hat that stays on at speed, or a cap with a strap
  • Sunglasses with a retaining strap
  • A light windproof layer or an oversized shirt

What should I wear for the Sunset Trip?

Wear long trousers or a dress you are comfortable in, plus a warm layer, because it cools quickly once the sun drops. The Sunset Trip leaves 1 h 15 before that day's sunset, so it sets off around 16:45 in December and around 20:00 in June. There is no swimming on this trip, as the water is too cold that late, so swimwear is not needed.

What shoes are best on a boat?

Flat, soft-soled shoes such as trainers or deck shoes grip best on a wet deck. Leave heels at the hotel and avoid loose flip-flops on a moving boat. Your crew will tell you when shoes can come off.

What do I not need to bring?

You do not need to bring food, drinks or a camera. Drinks and food are served on board, and every trip includes an Insta360 360° video, drone footage from above (weather allowing) and high quality photos taken with a real camera. Your phone can stay in your pocket, or in a waterproof pouch if you want your own shots. To see how it all works, have a look at our private boat trips from Funchal.

What if I get seasick?

If you are prone to motion sickness, take a tablet an hour before departure and eat lightly beforehand. The south coast is usually sheltered, and on a private boat the pace is yours. Keep your eyes on the horizon, stay in the fresh air and sip water.
