Porto Moniz Natural Pools: How to Visit Madeira's Northwest Corner

8 October 20265 min readFunchal · Madeira

Porto Moniz sits at the far northwest tip of Madeira, and its natural lava pools are the reason most visitors make the drive. Here is how to reach them, when they are safe to use, and what to combine with them so the trip is worth the road.

What are the Porto Moniz natural pools?

They are saltwater swimming pools formed in volcanic rock on the seafront, filled and refreshed by the Atlantic. The main complex is managed, with an entrance fee, lifeguards, changing rooms and loungers, which makes it an easy, safe place to swim in the ocean without a beach. Beside it you will find smaller, free rock pools that are wilder and more exposed to waves.

How far is Porto Moniz from Funchal?

Allow around 1h15 to 1h30 each way by car, most of it on modern tunnels and expressway across the island. Public transport exists but is slow and infrequent, so a rental car or a private driver is the practical option. Start early: the pools are quietest in the morning, and the light on the cliffs is best before midday.

When is the best time to swim there?

Late spring to early autumn is the most reliable window, with calm seas and the warmest water in September and October. In winter the north coast takes the full force of Atlantic swell, and the pools can close when waves wash over the rock. Always check the sea conditions that morning, and follow the lifeguards' flags.

What else is worth seeing nearby?

The northwest rewards a slow day. These stops fit naturally around the pools:

  • Seixal: a small black-sand beach and volcanic pools about 15 minutes east, with a dramatic green backdrop.
  • Ilhéu Mole and its lighthouse: the small islet just off the Porto Moniz waterfront, a great photo subject.
  • Fanal: the misty laurel forest with ancient trees on the plateau above.
  • Ponta do Pargo lighthouse: the westernmost point of the island, with sunset views over open ocean.

What should you bring?

Pack a towel, water shoes (the rock is sharp and slippery), sun protection and a light jacket, because the northwest is often windier and cloudier than Funchal. Madeira has several microclimates, so it can be raining in the mountains and sunny at the pools within the same hour. Bring a little cash or a card for entry and the seafront cafés.

Is it worth the drive compared with the south coast?

Yes, if you treat it as a full day, and no if you only have an afternoon. The north is wilder and greener; the south is warmer, calmer and better for swimming in open water. The two sides complement each other: do the north by road, then see the south from the sea. A private Chifbay boat trip from Funchal covers Cabo Girão, Fajã dos Padres and Ribeira Brava, with swim stops on the Day Trip, drinks and food aboard, plus an Insta360 360° video, drone footage and photos taken with a real camera.

The north coast is a day of roads and viewpoints. The south coast is a day of water. Do both.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Porto Moniz natural pools free?

No. The main lava pool complex is a managed facility with an entrance fee, lifeguards, changing rooms and sun loungers. The small free rock pools beside the sea nearby are open to everyone, but are more exposed to swell.

How long does it take to drive from Funchal to Porto Moniz?

Allow roughly 1h15 to 1h30 each way by car, mostly on tunnels and expressway. Plan on a full day if you also want to stop at Seixal, Fanal or the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse.

Are the Porto Moniz pools open in winter?

Access depends on the sea. In heavy Atlantic swell, which is common from late autumn to early spring, the pools can close for safety, so check conditions on the day before driving.

Is the water in the Porto Moniz pools warm?

It is seawater refreshed by the Atlantic, so it is cool and fresh, warmest from late summer into early autumn. Do not expect a heated pool.

Does Chifbay sail to Porto Moniz?

No. Chifbay runs private boat trips from Marina do Funchal along the south coast, to Cabo Girão, Fajã dos Padres, Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol. Many guests pair a north coast driving day with a boat day on the south.
