Madeira in November: Weather, Sea and What to Do

By Chifbay2 November 20265 min readFunchal · Madeira

November is one of Madeira's best-kept secrets: mild days, green hills after the first autumn rains, and a fraction of the summer crowds. Here is what to expect from the weather and the sea, and how to plan your days.

What is the weather like in Madeira in November?

Funchal in November typically sees daytime highs around 21°C and nights near 16 to 17°C, with a mix of sunshine and passing showers. Rain is more likely than in summer, but it often falls in the mountains and on the north coast while the south coast stays bright. Days are shorter, with sunset in the early evening, so start your outings in the morning.

Can you swim in the sea in Madeira in November?

Yes, if you are happy with fresh water: the Atlantic around Madeira usually sits at roughly 21 to 22°C in November, thanks to the warmth it stored over summer. It is not bathtub warm, but on a sunny day many people swim happily, especially with a quick towel and a warm layer waiting on the boat. If you prefer calmer, warmer swimming, Funchal's hotel lido areas and the natural pools at Porto Moniz and Seixal are alternatives, though the sea there can be rougher in autumn and winter.

Can you take a boat trip in Madeira in November?

Yes, boat trips run through the autumn whenever the sea and weather allow, and November often has lovely, clear spells along the south coast. At Chifbay the whole boat is yours, for up to 5 guests, from Marina do Funchal. The Day Trip leaves at 10:00 or 14:00 and runs Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão with a drone flight, Fajã dos Padres and Ribeira Brava, with swimming for those who want it. The 2h30 version is €500; the 3h version at €600 continues a little further to Ponta do Sol. Drinks and food are aboard, and every trip includes an Insta360 360° video, drone footage (weather allowing) and photos taken with a real camera.

Is the Sunset Trip worth it in November?

Very much so: November light is soft and golden, and the cliffs of Cabo Girão glow in the late sun. The Sunset Trip leaves 1 h 15 before sunset, rounded down to the quarter hour, so in November that means a late-afternoon departure, roughly 16:30 to 16:45, and you are back in Funchal as the lights come on. There is no swimming on this trip because the water is too cold that late, but it is the most atmospheric way to end the day. It is €400 for 2h turning at Cabo Girão, or €500 for 2h30 turning at Ribeira Brava, with drinks and food aboard.

What else is there to do in Madeira in November?

November suits walking, gardens, food and village life better than beach time. Good options include:

  • Levada walks: the forest is lush after the rains, but trails can be slippery, so check conditions and wear proper shoes.
  • Funchal's Zona Velha and Mercado dos Lavradores: ideal for a wet morning, with fruit, flowers and poncha.
  • Gardens and Monte: the botanical and tropical gardens are at their freshest.
  • Chestnut season: chestnuts and roasted-chestnut stalls appear around the island, and 1 November (All Saints' Day) is a public holiday, so expect some closures.
  • Madeira wine: cool evenings are perfect for a tasting of Sercial, Verdelho, Boal or Malmsey.

What should you pack for Madeira in November?

Pack layers: a T-shirt for midday, a fleece or light jacket for evenings and the boat, and a thin waterproof for showers. Add comfortable shoes with grip, sunglasses and sun cream (the sun is still strong), plus swimwear and a towel if you plan to get in the water on the Day Trip. Mountain viewpoints such as Pico do Arieiro can be 10°C cooler than Funchal and often cloudy, so dress warmly if you go up.
