For July, August, Easter and the Christmas to New Year fortnight, book a private boat trip in Madeira three to four weeks ahead. In the quieter months a few days can be enough, but each departure has one boat to sell, so the slot you want can go in a single booking.
Why does a private boat sell out sooner than a big catamaran?
Because one booking takes the whole boat. A catamaran with dozens of seats can still sell its last few places on the morning of the trip. A private boat cannot. Chifbay runs a single boat, and a booking hands it to one group of up to five, with no strangers added. So each departure is sold once, to one group, and then it is gone.
The day also has only a few departure times. The Day Trip west to the coves has two starts, 10:00 and 14:00. The Sunset Trip along the south coast has one, and it shifts with the season: 1 h 15 before sunset, so around 16:45 in December but nearer 20:00 in June. That is the whole menu. When a couple books the 14:00 on a Saturday in August, nobody else can have it.
The good news is the other side of the same fact. Nobody is waiting for a minimum number of people to fill the boat before the trip goes ahead. If the slot is free when you look, and you book it, it is yours.
How early should you book in each season?
The short version: the busier the island, the earlier you book. This is our advice, based on how the year runs in Funchal, not a rule.
| When you travel | What is happening | Book this far ahead |
|---|---|---|
| July and August | Summer holidays. August is usually the island's busiest month for tourist nights. | 3 to 4 weeks, more for weekends |
| Easter and the Flower Festival in spring | Short breaks and festival crowds in Funchal | 2 to 3 weeks |
| June and September | Long, warm evenings. Sunset departures are at their latest. | 1 to 2 weeks, earlier for the Sunset Trip |
| October to April | Cruise season. Some days have several ships in port. | 1 to 2 weeks for a morning trip on a cruise day, a few days otherwise |
| Christmas to New Year | Lights, family visits, the 31 December fireworks | As soon as your dates are fixed |
The August line is not a guess. Madeira's monthly tourism figures have set their highs in August in recent years. The cruise line is not a guess either. The Port of Funchal had its busiest month on record in November 2024, with more than 145,000 cruise passengers, and autumn and early winter remain the heaviest months for ship calls.
Which departures go first?
Some slots suit more people than others, so they fill first. If you have a favourite, secure it before you book the rest of your week.
- The 10:00 Day Trip on cruise days. A morning trip fits neatly inside a port day, back at 12:30 or 13:00, with the afternoon left for Funchal.
- Weekends in summer. Saturdays and Sundays suit the most people. If your dates are flexible, a Tuesday or Wednesday gives you more choice.
- Summer sunsets. In June the Sunset Trip leaves around 20:00. That is a perfect slot after a beach day and before a late dinner, and there is only one of it each evening.
- Birthdays and anniversaries. If the date itself matters, you cannot move it. Book first, plan the rest after. Our guide to a romantic boat trip in Madeira covers what to think about.
- New Year's Eve. The fireworks night on the boat on 31 December runs from 22:00 to 01:00. Details and booking are on the New Year's Eve fireworks boat page. One boat, one night, one group.
Can you book at the last minute?
Sometimes, yes. Your odds are decent on a quiet weekday outside the holidays, with no ship in port. They are poor on an August weekend.
The quickest test is to try your date on the booking page. If a departure shows as open, it is open. You will also find the Chifbay boat on GetYourGuide, Viator and Click&Boat. They all sell the same few departures, so a slot taken on one site disappears from the others. For an hour that is not on the timetable, message us on WhatsApp about a private custom trip. Ask, and we will tell you if it can work.
What a last-minute booking cannot do is pick the weather. If you leave it to your final day and the sea is not safe that day, there is no second chance. That is the real cost of waiting.
Is it risky to book weeks ahead, given the weather?
Less than people think. You can cancel without charge up to a full 24 hours ahead. And if the skipper decides the sea is unsafe, the trip is off and the choice is yours: a new date or your money back. An early booking secures the slot, while your money stays safe if a storm comes.
The smart move is to book an early day of your stay, not the last one. If the skipper does call off the trip, you still have days left to move it. How the skipper reaches that decision is set out in our page on bad weather and cancelled trips.
When does booking early make little sense?
To be honest, if you are coming for a quiet week in February and you are flexible on the day, there is not much to gain from booking two months out. Watch the forecast, pick a calm-looking day once you arrive, and book a few days before. You may lose your first choice of time, but you will choose your sea.
The opposite is true for short stays. If you are in Madeira for two or three nights, or on a single port day, book before you travel. You have no room to move.
So when should you actually book?
- Fix your flights or your ship's port day first.
- Choose your trip. Swims and coves mean the Day Trip, golden light and no swimming mean the Sunset Trip. Our Day Trip or Sunset comparison helps if you are torn.
- Pick one of your first days on the island.
- Book as far ahead as the table above suggests for your month.
- Relax. Until 24 hours before, you can still change your mind for free.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book a private boat trip in Funchal for the same day?
Sometimes, outside the busy months, if that departure is still open. Try the date on the booking page, or ask on WhatsApp.
Is it cheaper to book early?
No. The price is per boat and does not change with the date you book: 400 or 500 EUR for the Sunset Trip, 500 or 600 EUR for the Day Trip.
What if my plans change after I book?
Nothing is lost if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start.
How early should I book the New Year's Eve boat?
As early as you can. It is one boat for one group on one night. All details are on the New Year's Eve fireworks page.
A catamaran sells seats. A private boat sells a morning, an afternoon or a sunset, and each one only once.
